What Is GEO? Generative Engine Optimisation Explained for Business Owners

More and more people ask AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity which business to choose. Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO, is how you make sure your business is part of that answer.

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of making a business and its content easy for generative AI systems to understand, trust and cite. It focuses on clear entity information, answer-first content, structured data, consistent brand mentions across the web and regular testing of how AI assistants describe the brand.

Why GEO matters now

Traditional search shows a list of links and lets people choose. AI assistants work differently: they read many sources and write one short answer. If a customer asks “who builds good websites in Punjab?” the assistant may name two or three businesses and nobody else.

That changes the goal. Ranking on page one is still valuable, but being named in the answer is becoming just as important. GEO is the work that makes that more likely.

How AI assistants decide what to say

Different assistants work in different ways, but most rely on a mix of what they learned during training and what they find through live web search. In both cases they favour information that is:

  • Clear: the business name, location, services and founder are stated plainly.
  • Consistent: the same facts appear on the website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.
  • Quotable: pages answer real questions in short, direct sentences.
  • Corroborated: other trusted websites mention the business.

GEO vs SEO: what is the difference?

GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. A fast, well-structured, indexable website is still the foundation. The difference is in the emphasis:

  • SEO optimises pages to rank for keywords. GEO optimises a brand to be understood as an entity.
  • SEO measures rankings and clicks. GEO also measures mentions inside AI answers.
  • SEO values backlinks. GEO also values unlinked mentions and consistent facts.

The 6 building blocks of GEO

1. Entity clarity

Decide exactly how your business should be described in one sentence, and use that description everywhere: your homepage, About page, Google Business Profile and social bios.

2. Answer-first content

Start important pages with a two or three sentence summary that directly answers the main question. AI systems often quote exactly these kinds of passages.

3. Structured data

Schema markup such as Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Person and FAQPage tells machines precisely what each page is about and how the facts connect.

4. Crawl access and llms.txt

Make sure AI crawlers are not blocked in robots.txt, and consider an llms.txt file: a plain-text summary of your site that points AI tools to your most important pages.

5. Mentions and reviews

Get listed on relevant directories, industry sites and local publications, and collect genuine reviews. Every consistent mention strengthens your entity.

6. Testing and iteration

Ask the major assistants the questions your customers ask, every month, and record whether and how your business appears. Improve what is missing.

A simple GEO checklist

  • One clear sentence that describes your business, used everywhere
  • Name, address and phone identical on every platform
  • An About page that names the founder and explains your expertise
  • Answer-first summaries on your main service pages
  • FAQ sections with real customer questions
  • Organization, Service and FAQ schema validated
  • AI crawlers allowed and an llms.txt file published
  • A monthly AI answer test

How long does GEO take?

On-site changes can be completed in weeks. Changes in how assistants describe you usually take longer, because models and search indexes update on their own schedules. Treat GEO as an ongoing practice, like SEO, rather than a one-time task.
